Busó Carnival 2011
March 3rd – 8th

This folk tradition of Mohács for bidding farewell to winter and welcoming spring was included on the UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in autumn 2009

March 3rd – Thursday – „Little Carnival”

From 10 am at the Kossuth Movie Theater (3 Deák Square): National Folk Music and Folk Art Festival of Hungarian Catholic Schools
From 10 am at the Youth Centre (16 Széchenyi Square): Preparation for the Carnival
From 2 pm at the Youth Centre: Performance of MárkusZínház theater group for children
From 3 pm Free Carnival celebration of young jankele and little Busó groups
From 3.15 pm Carnival procession starting from the Sokac Circle (Táncsics St. – Szabadság St. – Széchenyi Square)
4-5 pm at Széchenyi Square: Children’s Carnival – demonstration of tools and accessories of the Busó Carnival
3-5 pm Programs on the open-air stage:
Aranyosvíz folk-dance group,
Szélvirág dance group,
Mohács Tamburica School,
Children dance group of the Sokac reading circle of Mohács,
Mladi Momci Busó group and Botos Busó group
At 5 pm at Kanizsai Dorottya Museum (Városház Street): opening ceremony of the tale exhibition “If you don’t believe it, see it for yourself”
At 5 pm at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): Carnival handicraft workshop and games for children, making Busó masks
From 7 pm Busó dance house (music by: Egy Húron Pendülünk)

March 4th – Friday

From 1 pm at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): Regional German folk-singing contest organized by the Local Government of the German Minority and the Park Utca Elementary School
From 3.30 pm Opening of the exhibition „Mask inspirations” by Gábor Lukács (textile artist) and Adrián Vargacz (painter) at the little gallery of the mask-carving workshop (7 Kígyó St.)
From 5 pm in the aula and upstairs gallery of the Kossuth Movie Theater (3 Deák Square): Exhibition from the selected works of local Busó-mask carvers, gallery of Busó accessories and opening ceremony of Gergely Böhm’s exhibition entitled “Poklade”
From 6 pm on the open-air stage at Deák Square: Introduction of Busó groups
7-10 pm „From tavern to tavern” (wine tour with the Busós)
From 8 pm at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): Dance house with music by Egy Húron Pendülünk and Söndörgő

From 9 am at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): 40th “Lajos Schneider” National Meeting of Folk Singers
At 11 amon the open-air stage at Deák Square: Introduction of the Favellás Busó group
From 12 am in the city centre: folk art and handicraft fair
From 2 pm at the Kossuth Movie Theater (3 Deák Square): Gala program of the 40th “Lajos Schneider” National Meeting of Folk Singers
From 1 pm Wedding march of the Busós from the ferry to Bakács Street and back to Széchenyi Square, on the way with wreath-laying at the Busó statue at Bensheim Square
At 3 pm on the open-air stage at Deák Square: Foretaste of the Piper Meeting, then introduction of Busó groups
At 4 pm at the Schneider School of Arts (3 Vörösmarty St.): International Piper Meeting
At 4 pmat Széchenyi Square: „Rebirth of the Legend” the Busó Club remembers the Second Battle of Mohács
At 4 pm Wreath-laying at the statue of the Three brave soldiers, then dance of the Busós
From 4.30 pm Presentation of antique bicycles in the walking street
From 4.30 pm at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): „Inviting Spring” – Carnival fun and dance house organized by the Schneider School of Arts and the Folk Workshop Sátorhely

From 7 pm at Ifjúsági Centrum: Hungarian Dance Evening organized by the Reading Circle of Mohács Citizens
Opening dance by: Sátorhely Folk Dance Ensemble, Welcome speech by: József Szekó, Mayor of Mohács
From 8 pm at Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.): Dance house with the music groups Poklade (South-Slavic dances) and Bartina (Hungarian dances)
From 9 pm Carnival Dance Evening at the School of Arts (3 Vörösmarty St.)

March 6th – Carnival Sunday

From 9 am in the main street: Folk art and handicraft fair
From 10 am at the Kossuth Movie Theater (3 Deák Square): Folk-dance program of nationalities
9-12 am Preparation of the Busós, or feasting with the Bödönhajós Busó group and the band Šokadija (address: 60 Bajcsy-Zs. St.)
From 10 am at Széchenyi Square: Short show of the Busó groups
At 11 am on the open-air stage at Deák Square: Introduction of the Favellás Busó group
10 am – 17 pm Presentation by Antal Englert, Master of Folk Art – Busó-mask carving ‘live’ and in close-up (7/a Kígyó St.)
At 10.30 am at Széchenyi Square: Sokac dances directed by István Darazsacz, with music by Poklade
At 1 pm at the former port, the so-called “Sokac-rév”: Busó groups from the Mohács island cross the Danube in boats featuring the Dance group from Duboševica
From 1.30 pm Wreath-laying at the memorial plaque of István Pávkovics „Páták” together with the Busó Club (36 Gólya St.)
At 1.30 pm on the open-air stage at the main square: Folk-dance show of the nationalities
From 2 pm at Kóló Square: Gathering of the Busós and Carnival groups
From 2.20 pm Busó procession from Kóló Square to Széchenyi Square
From 3 pm on the open-air stage at the main square: Busó initiation ceremony, welcoming toast of the Mayor
At 3 pm Free Carnival celebration in the main street and the main square
From 3.30 pm Shows of the Busó groups and the folk dance groups from the procession
At 3.30 pm on the stage of the Millennium Monument at the Danube: Presentation of the Poklade Busó group
At 4.15 pm at the river, from the ferry: Setting the Carnival coffin afloat on the Danube, featuring the Bödönhajós Busó-group
At 4.30 pm Sokac folk songs performed by Éva Menyhárt
At 5 pm the assembled tamburica orchestra plays folk music from Mohács
At 5.30 pm at Széchenyi Square: Lighting the bonfire and circle-dance of the Busós
At 7.30 pm Popping corn with the Busós, then dance house at the Duna Office House (4-6 Szabadság St.) – with musicians form the Tamburica School
From 9 pm in the main hall of the Schneider School of Arts (3 Vörösmarty St.): SOKAC DANCE EVENING with programs by KUD Bronanci Osijek – Croatia

March 7th – Monday

At 10 am Community forum with representatives of the elements inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage
At 11 am at the Gallery of the Town Hall: Introductory exhibition of the elements inscribed on
the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage (Opening ceremony)
At 12 am at the Sokac Circle: Wreath-laying at the memorial plaque of Anka Kersics – commemorative speech by Museum director Jakab Ferkov, followed by the tradition of Busós visiting the houses at the Kóló Square and the surrounding streets

March 8th – Shrove Tuesday

From 3 pm at Kóló Square: Gathering
At 3.15 pm Departure of Busó groups
From 3.30 pm „Busó picture” on the stairs of the Town Hall, then free Carnival celebration in the streets of Mohács
From 4 pm Sokac folk songs performed by Éva Menyhárt
At 4.30 pm on the stage at the main square: Show of folk dance ensemble Zora
At 5 pm Live tamburica music on the stage performed by local players
At 5.30 pm at Széchenyi Square: Lighting the bonfire – burning the coffin of winter
