Villa Orsera
Vrsar, Istarska - Adria

At the mouth of the Limski kanal you will find Vrsar, a small hilltop village with a picturesque campanile- topped summit. It is a beautifully preserved, tranquil place where you can get lost exploring. The former fishing village Vrsar (2,700 inhabitants) developed to an important holiday center. The long routistic tradition reaches up to the summer residences of the Porečer bishops. A characteristic is the division in two parts of the city in the bank promenade and the hilly old part of town on the other side. The life seems to take place only at the bank range, while the old part of town makes an impression as before 50 years. Mind you there are some very beautifully reconditioned old part of town little houses also there.
Vrsar is directly because of the distance Pula - to Poreč and is good with the car to reach. There are good bus connections after Poreč, Pula and Rovinj. In of the city should one to the numerous and close one-way streets adjust itself. There is a large parking lot (liable to pay the costs in the season) with the gas station at the port.
History of Vrsar
The city has its name probably from two close convenient sources, which one derives from its documented original designations. The place was called over the centuries Ursaria, Ursarium, Orsaria and Vrsarium, where the word source is contained in each case. Relikte of old mansions and mosaic finds witness from the coining/shaping Roman time. In the Middle Ages the city was surrounded by a Townwalls, from which the two city gates are still best received. Also the castellet and a early Christian Basilika still witness from this time. From 983 to 1778 the city stood under the direct administration of the diocese Poreč, became however under Austrian regency in 19. Ct. an own district. Further history is closely linked with the bishop seat Poreč. Some centuries long from the quarry the “stone di Orsera” was exported to Venice or Ravenna. The senate of Venice and above all the Venezian Magno felt Vrsar as place of refuge “queue nest at the bosom of Venice” for criminals!
What to see in Vrsar
The Sea Gate of Vrsar is the last remain of the once fortified town and the Church of St Mary from the 10th century is an important Romanesque monument in Istria. See the Vergotini Castle, and the church of St Anthony.
