Lábod
Lábod, Somogy megye - Hungary
In 1870 Lábod, the centre of notarial district, had already 133 houses and 1500 inhabitants. The industrial development after the compromise left its mark on the settlement: in 1889 the work started in the startch factory, estabilished by Adolf Byss, which processed the potatoe surplus of the environment. For the water need of the factory the earl made an artesian well drilled: it was 560 m deep and gave 1500 hectoliter 21 C degree warm water per day.
The inhabitants used the water as drinking water, but for the rich persons a bathcabin was built as well. In Lábod there was the first railway station of the county, where trains came from Barcs and Somogyszob. The railway route between Nagyatád and Barcs, which functioned from 1890, was closed in 1977, because of financial reasons. In the environment of Lábod the sustenance was insured by agriculture and the forestry. Till the millenium the agriculture was in co-operative form, in the latest years the number of private ownership has increased. The sandy earth is good for potatoe and cereals. From the near forrests lands got to private owners, so the new owners formed forestries. The national territories of Lábod forrests are cared by SEFAG Share Company, which had an own forestry. The Lábod Share Company makes successful game management on the territory. The county hunter day, which has been organized since 1991 yearly, is connected to its name and is a uniqiue gastronimical event. On the settlement there are a slaughter house, an Italian sawfactory, a German packing factory, and more than 50 private companies.
