13TH DANUBE CARNIVAL

Budapest hosts one of the most colourful cultural series of events of the Hungarian summer, for the thirteenth time. The Danube Carnival International Multi-cultural Festival is a ten-day long chain of dance and music programmes organised at main sites of Budapest. The carnival atmosphere will be enhanced by the various forms of artistic expression involved including folk dance and music, contemporary dance, symphonic music, world music and brass music. In addition to the Hungarian traditional and professional dance groups, the carnival will incorporate many European performers from outside Hungary as well as guest ensembles from overseas. The event is part of the “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008” campaign.The purpose of the carnival is to proudly present the most significant national and regional cultural achievements and trends at the European level, while at the same time enhancing the intercultural dialogue. This year 12 foreign ensembles with 300 artists will be performing at the carnival which will span Budapest and beyond. The Danube Carnival is also an official member of the “1001 Actions for Dialogue” campaign of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.The sites of the Carnival: Vörösmarty Square, Margaret Island Open Air Theatre, Roosevelt Square, Mátyásföld, Békásmegyer, Győr, Budakalász, Üröm. All programs will be free to the public except for the Gala at the Margaret Island Open Air Theater. We promise to provide the audience with long-lasting experience in the different styles. Our aim is to integrate the Danube Carnival, as a significant event series of the national and international traditions into the cultural life of the festival-city, Budapest and Europe. In the last years our event gained the honorary title of Europe Top 500.The Main Patron of the Danube Carnival is Katalin Bogyay, State Secretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Education and Culture.
