European Convivial Wine Songs Festival

European Convivial Wine Songs Festival
27 September 2007 - 30 September 2007

European Convivial Wine Song Festivals Pécs, Hungary 2006 - 2010 Pécs, an attractive old university town with a special Mediterranean atmosphere, has been hosting a unique festival for male choruses, vocal ensembles and soloists every year since 1993.

The festival's host ensemble is the "Bartók Béla" Male Chorus, widely known for its excellent quality and international success.

Participating choirs should prepare a 10 - 15 minutes gala programme, focusing on convivial wine songs, to introduce their national musical traditions connected with viniculture, grapes and wine. This programme may include both folklore-based and original compositions as well as arrangements.

The capacity for the festival is around two hundred singers. Beside presenting their own, national programme, participants also join in the Festival Chorus, performing the most well-known convivial wine songs and arrangements from several historical eras.

The festival has different venues, including the world-famous Villány Wine Region, the National Theatre in Pécs (site of the gala concert) and the Széchenyi Square, also in Pécs. In the Square, amidst the Feast of Grapes and Wine, around ten thousands people enjoy the colourful programmes of the choirs, the invited folklore ensembles and dance groups.

When applying, a recent audio-recording is requested with the basic information on the choir (number of singers, short CV). Applications should be sent in continuously, however the deadline of application for a specific year is the 31st January of the same year. Beside bearing travel expenses to and from Pécs and paying a token contribution of 50 € / person, there are no additional costs for the accepted choirs: full board and lodging are provided by the festival. For accompanying persons - friends, spouses, children - food and accommodation as well as special programmes are available on request at a reasonable cost.

World Convivial Wine Song Festivals are organised in every fourth year.
