Edelény, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megye - Hungary


The world war I and II claimed victims from Edelény as well.
The nationalization after 1945 made a new economical construction, important developments happened in coal mining. Beside the coal mining the agriculture had important role in the economy of the town. The coal-mine and the collective farm were closed after the political change in 1989, therefore the unemployment increased.
From the hard economical situation companies and associations helped the town to come out. The infrastructure is complete, which is the result of the work of self-governments after 1989. Satellite television was connacted into 2700 flats, which broadcasts the local channel as well. The town is clean and organized, the development of its institutes has started. One of the routes drive to the Aggtelek National Park cross the town, which increases the touristical importance of the town.
The town also has touristical sights, among which the followings are worth to mention: the Borsod Castle, from which the county got its name and it was the first lord lieutenantal centre, the Gothical Calvinist Church, which was built in 1330, the L’Hullier-Coburg Castle which was built between 1727 and 1730 and the Borsod Landscape House, which is the museum of the town, it shows the instruments, culture and handicraft of the Cserehát nation. In the there are two kindergardens, three primary schools and a secondary school. It has cultural centre, library, hospital, pension, Tourinform Office, local television, social home and family supporting institute. Its trade radiates, supports the inhabitants well. It has sister town in Switzerland, Polland and Germany, with which the town has strong connection.
