Edelény, Edelény, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megye - Hungary

The first documental mention of Edelény was in 1299, but Borsod was written in a document already in 1108
In the last centuries several owners possessed the settlement, among which the most significants are worth to be mentioned: the Bebek family (15.century), János Szapolyai (16.century), from 1566 King Miksa I., from 1603 Rákóczy family, from 1700 Ferenc János L’Hullier and his inheritors, from 1820 the Coburgs. During the time of Turkish conquest it was possessed by the turks and it became uninhabited, then it was resettled. The main well of maintanance of Edelény and its joined settlements was the agriculture in the Middle Ages and remained it till the end of the 19th century. The different levels of agricultural works and their groups were present in Edelény already in the time of Feudalism and they took their part in the production parallel with the serfs and cotters. The bridge-duty and the water-mill belonging to the manor, mentioned at the first time in 1564 and was destroyed in 1970, had an important role as well. In Borsod also functioned a water-mill. The first serious economical change happened in 1838, when the Coburgs built a sweet factory. For the constructions brick was insured from the brick-factory of Nagyvölgy. For the heating of steam mashines brown coal was also used beside the wood from the surrounding forrests.
The newer economical boom meant the industrial development of the end of 19 century and the beginning of the 20 century, during which more contractors purchased mining right and mines were continuously opened one after the other. At the beginning of the 20th century the handicraft and the agriculture had the significant role in Edelény of 2000 inhabitants.
